I'm Martin Smith Director at Ryans

Martin Smith Accountant

My time at Ryans:

I joined Ryans in 2000 and became a manager in 2004, later becoming a partner in 2006.

Don’t worry, I’m qualified:

I passed my final professional examinations at 21, becoming qualified as a chartered accountant with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) in 2012.

Why Ryans:

I act for a variety of clients, focusing on SMEs, family owned and owner managed businesses.

My goals for each client are to maximise wealth, whilst minimising tax liabilities and to protect assets both from a business and personal perspective.

I have a passion for assisting clients through the life cycle of their business and providing solutions for the challenges they face along the way.

Over the years, I’ve worked on a variety of assignments and sectors, from multi-million-pound construction and manufacturing companies, to small retail outlets and charities.

Besides owning the accountancy firm, I was involved as a director and shareholder of a new start up care home in 2009, which is still operational along with a couple of other ventures. This ensures that I have personally experienced all the challenges of running a business outside of an accountancy firm.

Apart from a 12 month period where I ditched the calculator for a backpack and some questionable accommodation, I have always worked in accountancy and thoroughly enjoy the interaction with our fantastic clients, staff and other professionals we work closely with.

Outside the office

I spend a lot of spare time with my two young children and when possible I like to escape onto the golf course. I enjoy watching football (the trying to play days are well behind me) and I’m always up for an adventure.
