I was born in Nelson on 20th June 1957 and have lived in what I call Lancashire all my life. (Others may deem that I had a short spell in Greater Manchester ! )
My father Pete was a chartered surveyor until his retirement in 1980. For the latter part of his career he was District Valuer of Bolton and was also the second ever President of the Bolton Branch of the Institution of Chartered Surveyors. My mother Joyce worked in marine insurance up to her marriage and was also a dance instructor where she met my father when he went for lessons. He remained under her feet until he died in 1997 after being happily married for almost 44 years.
My connection with Bolton started in 1968 when I entered Bolton School. An average pupil I left in 1975 with 7 O levels and 4 A levels and spent a year at Manchester Polytechnic where I completed the foundation course in Accountancy.
I served my contract with Kevan Pilling & Co who at the time were the largest practice in Bolton. I qualified in December 1980 and decided to remain with the firm and continue my career in Bolton, becoming a manager in 1983. A series of mergers, firstly with Spicer & Oppenheim and subsequently with Touche Ross culminated in the closure of the Bolton office. I was fortunate enough to walk straight into another job as manager with Kevans a small practice in Bolton where I remained until I was approached in September 1996 by my now partners to join the newly merging Edward Ryan & Co (as it then was).
I have been a committee member of the Bolton Society of Chartered Accountants since my Kevan Pilling days and have represented them on the Institute of Chartered Accountants Regional Technical Advisory Committee in Manchester since 1986. I was President of the Bolton Society of Chartered Accountants for 1995/96.
My main interest is crown green bowling at which I have played for several clubs both locally in Bolton and with my father on the Fylde coast to where my parents retired. I have represented the Turton league select side in inter-league matches. I play pool for my local pub the Black Bull in Belmont and I also play snooker but not at a very competitive level.
As you can probably tell from the above I have tried to remain a dedicated batchelor but I became engaged to Anne during the summer of 1998. She hasn't named the date yet!
